IS IT REALLY “FULL CONTACT”? ISN’T THAT DANGEROUS?

Yes, Kyokushin Karate is a full contact style. Our organization emphasizes progressive, hard body contact using simple and effective techniques. It is conducted with a vigorous proactive attitude with an aim to develop a non-quitting spirit. All of our training is done in a safe, progressive manner. No one is asked to do anything they do not feel ready to do. Safety equipment is used during training. Injuries can occur in karate as in all physical activities but we work to ensure we can all come back to training the next day.

DO I NEED TO LEARN JAPANESE?

As a traditional Japanese style we do use Japanese terminology for our techniques, kata and movement. Our Association’s publication Phoenix Budo is the seminal reference for all of our techniques and terminology.

DO I NEED TO BE IN GOOD SHAPE TO START?

The simple answer is just come as you are. We are all in different stages of our physical journeys. The beauty of karate is you can start at any place in that journey and move forward. Waiting to be in “good enough” shape will likely mean not starting. What have you got to lose!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

New students should come to class prepared to sweat, in loose fitting comfortable clothing such as sweatpants and a T-shirt. No shoes, socks, or jewelry is allowed for safety reasons. When a student is ready to make a commitment to the class, a dogi (Karate uniform) may be purchased through the our organization. Training equipment such as protective pads can also be purchased.
